"I'm internet dating all the time!"
"The Vandals" - eine echte Punkrocklegende. Zum X-ten mal in Deutschland, spielten sie als Headliner der Kungfu Records Labeltour Anfang 2003 leider nur 4 Shows in good old Germany.

Story Bild Punch: So the second part of your name is bush?
Dave: Bush,yes.
Punch: And what does that remind you of?
Dave: It reminds me of a place where frogs live, in bushes.
Punch: i see..
Dave: Oh, and it reminds me of a woman's private parts
Punch: Ah ok, it's also a bush, but you know sometimes it's not that bushy there..
Dave: What does a frog make, in german?
Punch: Quaak.

-snip-

Punch: To the guitar player of Audio Karate who was also present: So your writing a postcard while i'm trying to do an interview?
Anonymous guitar player: Yeah!
Punch: Ok, so how did you come up with that whole internet dating thing?
Joe E: I'm internet dating all the time!
Punch: Really, all the time?
Dave: No, but there's some funny websites where we go like hotornot.com where you can watch the pictures and judge wether they're hot or not... and then my mother's friends started with internet dating so i thought it that was kind of funny ...
Joe E: My Aunt married a man she dated over the internet.
Story BildPunch: No way haha. Ok, how's been the tour until now in this respect?
Dave: Oh, good, i mean this is like people get a free ticket to the show they get a pass and then they come back and we hang out a little bit and have a couple of beers..
Punch: So only that, it's not like that something serious happens with girls or so?
Dave: Yeah, you know, most of the people who win the contest are young boys BUT there was one girl who was very nice, and yes, we made love until the sun came up.
Joe E: Hehehe
Punch: Oh i see that's great because you know my girlfriend, she has a date with you tomorrow in Cologne
Joe E: Really? Will you be there too?
Punch: Eh, no, but...
Joe E: We will be nice!
Dave: Does she have a bush?
Punch: Eh.. i'd say find out on yourself..
Dave: Oh well thank you for permission then ...
Punch: Oh no, you don't.
Dave: I'll wear a condom!
Punch: Why would you ... No, whatever.
Joe E: Hehe

Punch: So, is it your first time you do such a big tour like this one a Kungfu Records label tour with 4 Kungfu bands on it?
Dave: Yes, this is the first time we do such a big package.
Joe E: Yeah, biggest headlining package we've done ...
Dave: We've done a few little ones like with 2 Kungfu bands, another band but yes this is the biggest package so far..
Story BildPunch: And do you think it's cool or ist it is kind pushing you somewhere because you have to sort of take care about the younger bands the other bands?
Dave: Well, it's very good for Kungfu Records ...
Joe E: Yeah, i have to take care of it. For me it's much more work, like when i could be resting in the bus, i have to watch the younger Kungfu bands. It's more work for me, and more work for the label.
Punch: I think that idea with the internet dating thing is pretty rad.
Joe E: Thank you.
Punch: Do you want to do that in the future also?
Dave: Yeah i think so, during our summer tour in the states, why not.
Punch: Yeah, it's really great you can make some real connection to the people.
Joe E: Otherwise sometimes you don't talk to anybody, you know.
Punch: Yeah or anybody comes there and wants to talk to you and maybe it's also convenient for you to have some people picked ...
Dave: Yeah, and it's also that you know if they're real fans and not just some drunk people who want some free beer...
Joe E: You got the best beer of the world?

-snip- Some talk about the beer i brought, Augustiner Edelstoff

Story BildPunch: What's your connection to the internet anyway because if i remember it alright then you were one of the first punk bands who had an own website?
Dave: We have an own website?? Yeah, trying to get them but someone else got that before and then wants to do some money of it.
Joe E: That's right, we were very lucky!
Dave: We also had a show on the internet called Fear of a punk planet.
Joe E: It's failures and successes. There's many failings in the internet, and I think the dating is a winner. But we've gone through a lot in the internet and ... It was on the network, and someone else like some non-punkrock people did it, but now we release that episodes on dvd, that's a much better product.
Punch: What's your opinion about irc and peer2peer networks like kazaa and such, that whole mp3 download thing?
Dave: Well it's good for getting to know new bands and such..
Joe E: I think that it's ok if records are released on the internet, but only after the street date. It's terrible.
Punch: Yeah i think so too because if i get the record 2 month earlier and like it really very much i say like i'm gonna buy that one definitely when it comes out but then 2 month later you don't remember that so well anymore...
Joe E: Yeah, the label should decide when the record is released, not some kid.
Punch: But I think the leaks are in the record companies itselves ...
Dave: Well they gotta send out promo to the fanzines before the record comes out ...
Joe E: radio stations ...
Dave: to get reviews and such ...
Punch: Well ehm, we're from a fanzine, and we have a radio programme too...
Joe E: Just talk to Didi ...
Punch: What's his second name?
Joe E: Parlaviet, Didi Parlaviet.
Punch: Ah it's a girl ??
Joe E: Well actually there's two girls in our office in Europe, in Holland.
Punch: Ah you're having a Kungfu office in Holland too? In Amsteram, also?
Joe E: Near Amsterdam, it's in "Del" [Punch: or so]

-snip- Punch repeating the same thing over and over again, alcohol related.

Story BildJoe E: Where's your list of questions?
Punch: Oh, my list of questions? It's here in my pocket. Eh, but i can't read it anymore ... because i was writing at this for several days now and sometimes i was was drunk, and now i can't read it anymore.
Vandals: Haha
Joe E: Alright, next question!
Punch: This tour isn't booked by Destiny Tourbooking, why is that?
Joe E: Our agents do that for us, we leave it to them ... In USA it's Leave Home Booking, in Europe it's Primary now.
Punch: Is that english based?
Joe E: Yeah, it is in England. This time we're doing 4, 5 german shows?
Most german shows ever!
Punch: Yeah one in the north one in the south one in the east one in the west, so, like christians?
Joe E: Yeah, like christians..
Punch: So your leaving on Friday?
Joe E: Yes, on Friday.
Punch: And the other bands, I didn't follow it that good ...
Joe E: Audio Karate is going with The Ataris to England, Tsunami Bomb is going to America to tour with Hot Rod Circuit.
Punch: So what are you going to do when you finish this tour?
Dave: Sleep ...
Joe E: Going to german restaurants in Los Angeles... Ratskeller, Löwenbräu ...

-snip- Various talk about beer, Edelstoff, Edelweiss. Dave seems to be
in the beer business "Yeah this is one nice beer, it's as good as it can get".

Punch: I didn't want to live in Munich, but the beer is good here ...
Dave: Are you from Cologne?
Punch: No, from Duesseldorf, it's near Cologne.
Joe E: Why i come from Dusseldorf and that's why they call me Rolf!
Dave: It's a musical..
Punch: You once played with NOFX in Duesseldorf ...
Joe E: Yes, we did.
Dave: We played every village in Germany!
Joe E: There's not a village in germany where we didn't play.
Punch: So you remember the 98 show in Hamburg ...
Joe E: We played 25 shows in Germany in 98 ...
Punch: I think i talked to you because we were thrown out by the bouncers ...
Joe E: And i was very sympathetic with your problem ...
Punch: hmm ...
Joe E: I tried to help you to get you back in ...
Punch: On the Reeperbahn
Joe E: And then i buyed you some prostitutes!
Story BildPunch: Haha, yeah i remember that too ... ok, let's talk about some of your songs because a lot of them touched me a lot, like "I have a date" and "My girlfriend's dead" especially, because at the time the song came out my girlfriend, she dumped me ...
Dave: She died ...
Punch: Yeah yeah she died, haha, yeah she was run over by a big truck ... I mean do all these songs have a personal background?
Dave: Everyone has had a girlfriend who dumped him ...
Joe E: Everybody had a girlfriend who died ...
Dave: You know, "I have a date" that's actually written by a band band called the simpletons ...
Punch: Ah, it's a cover?
Joe E: Yeah, people don't know. The guy who wrote it is named Jay Lensburg and he is living in Berlin.
Dave: But he's from California.

Punch: What about the song "disproportioned Head"?
Dave: It's about the bass player of Blink 182.
Joe E: Did you see him?
Dave: Next time you see him, look. He cut his hair very short so that makes his head look smaller ...
Joe E: What do you say in german "Next Question"?
Punch: Nächste Frage.
Joe E: NÄCHSTE FRAGE!
Punch: Sometimes I think some of the songs aren't THAT political..
Dave: Yes.
Dave: No, definately not ...
Punch: Besides maybe "Anarchy Burger" or such?
Dave: That's also not very political ...
Punch: Because i voted after i heard that song.
Vandals: You voted aftwerwards, haha ...
Joe E: I don't think there's no political message in it too, haha.
Punch: Well isn't the actual political situation not very tempting to do some really political songs ...
Dave: Not at all ...
Joe E: And our fans are only 15, 16 years old, I can't help them, what am i gonna do, she has parents ...
Dave: Because maybe your politics are different from my politics ...
Joe E: I might ruin her, you might ruin her ...
Dave: And if you want Warren to tell you about his politics then you just gonna be fucked ...
Joe E: Yeah you'll be screwed big time, mine ehm are quite perfect, but I still don't think that some our fans deserve to know the secrets of life because you gotta handle it ...
Dave: Just give them something to think more ...
Story BildPunch: What do think about RKL?
Dave: Never heard of them. But if we have song called "We like Bush" ...
Joe E: You like Bush, ok.
Dave: ... noone would take it serious anyways..
Joe E: Maybe we should make one, maybe we should make an whole concept album ...
Anonymous guitar player of Audio Karate: Yeah a Bush concept album, that should be very popular next year ...
Dave: "This is my president".
Joe E: Make him yours too, sign this petition.
Joe E: Yeah with blue stripes. Yeah we can have ladies back from texas.

-snip-

Dave: We're the Vandals, we're not politicians ... Next question, was it about RKL?
Joe E: Someone mentioned that already yesterday, in Belgium.
Dave: NOFX ripped off RKL and went good.
Joe E: Whow, that's harsh words coming frome Dave Quackenbush not from me.
Dave: The stole the good stuff and then RKL went down ...
Joe E: RKL influenced NOFX which is perhaps the greatest punk band of all time. So RKL had what they did but I think they were already burned out by the time they hit the head, stumbled onto something.
Punch: Do you know that they are back?
Joe E: They're always back ...
Punch: Are you planning to come back to Germany for the Deconstruction Tour?
Joe E: In 2004, we already signed a deal last night. That's an announcement, that's a scoop, that's for your magazine, your the first people to know ...
Dave: If the people who are reading this are still there in 2004 ...
Joe E: It's gonna be a world where the oil prices will be a lot less, so the ticket prices for Deconstruction in 2004 should be a lot less, because we will have a more stable oil price in 2004.
Punch: Ok, that's cool, thanks a lot for the interview..
Joe E: Thanks very much, Helmut ... I know it's not your second name, but it's my favourite german name ...
